Dealing with your first case of lice is overwhelming. I’m sure you’re asking yourself: Where do I start? What do I need to get rid of lice?
The answers are not as difficult as you may think. While we cover a thorough shopping list in our guide, “Uninvited: a mom’s guide to killing lice,” the basic items you need to remove any lice infestation is short and simple.
What do I need to get rid of lice?
- A lice treatment product. You can choose from an over the counter lice treatment found at your local pharmacy or an all natural lice removal method using olive oil from your pantry. Decide which one is best for you and read about how to choose the best lice treatment for kids here.
- A lice comb. This is essential, no matter which treatment method you choose. We recommend the The Terminator and keep one for each family member on hand during the school year. You can read a full review of the best lice comb here.
- Attention to detail and time: The number 1 most successful method of lice removal is paying attention to your child’s head and diligently removing all the eggs before they can hatch. This requires your attention for days to weeks and is not something that can be rushed. All it takes is one missed egg to start the cycle all over again. Being diligent about the egg removal is the single best thing you can do to get rid of lice.
